BSP Member Rex Butters around town

A couple of solo performances by BSP member Rex Butters:

First, an election night reading for the beautiful Flight School series at the Industry Jazz Cafe:

the new pledge of allegiance

bend over and
repeat after me

the elites educate you
to stop thinking
the elites want you to believe
what their media tells you
the elites want tv to be
your reality
the elites want you to eat
genetically altered/nutritionally empty
mutagenic food
the  elites want you to suspect everyone
but them
the elites encourage unspeakable violence
as the norm
the elites fully support
toothless artistic expression
the elites make every movie revolve around
who has the gun
the elites make music suck
by draining our lives
of sacred spontaneous sound
the elites want poetry to rhyme
all the time
the elites listen to your
phone calls
the elites make you work three jobs
die young, burnt out, and broke
too busy to read or react
the elites hate women
and children
the elites waste your limited resources
for their profit

the elites will privatize your water
after they fill it with toxic waste
the elites exploit impotent acts of radicalism
to pacify your heart and mind
the elites bake you with radiation
laughing from the comfort of their
lead-lined bunkers
the elites look you in the eye
take your children
molest them in airports
just to see you obey
the elites destroy community and culture
by raising rents
the elites want you to shut up and stay home
before a flickering light
the elites use their religions
to kill your spirit
the elites throw out your votes
the elites want the truth
marginalized
the elites want the truth
sanitized
the elites want the truth
institutionalized

the elites depend on you not believing me

you’ve forgotten how to scream

did you think one day
you’d wake up to find
everything is fair?
do you get up in the morning
and pump up your head with air?

do you think your leaders work for you
and all right thinking folk?
don’t you see them with their child sex slaves
doing endless lines of coke?
to them you’re another worker ox
tethered to their yoke
taxed to pay for their misdeeds
the butt of all their jokes

the alarm’s gone off
you’re still asleep
you prefer your waking dream
with tv’s lulling reassurances
you’ve forgotten how to scream

your doctor sells you poison and death
that comes on long and slow
you’re addicted to their lies like meth
you just don’t want to know
that you’re a guinea pig
a consumer report
sucked down by their under tow
your chronic ill health
provides their wealth
your misery makes them glow

the alarm’s gone off
you’re still asleep
you prefer your waking dream
with tv’s lulling reassurances
you’ve forgotten how to scream

it’s election time and the ruling class
has coughed up two more of its sons
they both think the same
in this transparent game
that guarantees nothing gets done
it should be clear to any fool
it’s always been one party rule
the only thing rising is scum
no one thinks it’s strange
only the spokespeople change
their agenda’s enforced with a gun

the alarm’s gone off
you’re still asleep
you prefer your waking dream
with tv’s lulling reassurances
you’ve forgotten how to scream
